It is estimated that as many as 3 million whiplash injuries occur in the U.S. each year. It is also estimated that 45% of people with chronic neck pain can attribute their pain to a past motor vehicle collision.
Whiplash injuries occur as a result of rapid acceleration and deceleration of the neck potentially causing damage to soft tissues and bones. The effects of a motor vehicle collision can take days or longer to set in and may produce neck pain ,headaches, lower back pain, shoulder pain and jaw pain (TMJ) to name a few.
Effective treatment requires detailed and comprehensive initial management which includes specific chiropractic adjustments, physiotherapy, management of inflammation, recommendations about activities of daily living and work and home ergonomics, exercise and home care. It is an unfortunate truth that many whiplash patients are not offered much in the way of treatment and are advised to simply live with the pain.
